10 Ways to Save Money on your Insurance BACK
1. Raise your deductibles
A deductible is the amount of money that you pay out before you collect on your claim. By raising your deductibles on collision and comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance, you can significantly lower your premiums. Also, raising your deductible on your homeowners insurance will lower your premium as well. We recommend that you never raise your deductibles above what you could afford to pay out at one time.
2. Drop collision and/or comprehensive coverages on older vehicles
If your vehicle is older and is worth less than $1,000 to $2,000, it may not be cost effective to keep comprehensive and collision coverage on it because any claim that you make may not substantially exceed the annual costs and deductible amounts. Contact any auto dealership or bank to find out the value of your vehicle.
3. When buying a vehicle, go for one that is "low profile"
Call your insurance agent with year, make and model of the vehicle BEFORE you purchase it to find out how it will affect your insurance premiums. Vehicles which have high performance capabilities, are expensive to repair, or are a favorite target for thieves, have significantly higher insurance premiums.
4. Insure your home and autos with the same company
Most insurance companies offer a discount up to 20% when they write both your home and auto policies.
5. Take advantage of low mileage discounts
If you are driving less than 9,000 miles a year in your vehicle or if you have a vehicle that is hardly ever driven, contact your agent. Some companies offer discounts to drivers who drive less than a predetermined number of miles annually.
6. Have your agent quote different companies for lower rates
Premiums for the same coverages can vary by hundreds of dollars from company to company, so it pays to shop different companies. Browse the internet, ask friends, or call your state insurance department for ideas about companies and agents to contact. However, don't shop price alone. Don't sacrifice service to save a couple dollars. While you may pay a bit more for quality personal service, it provides added conveniences, so talk to several agents to get a feel for the quality of their service.
7. Remain with the same insurance company
It sounds contradictory to #6 above, but, in reality most companies reward insureds who remain with them for years loss free. Hopefully you are already receiving the appropriate discounts, however, contact your agent to review your account to see if there are any more discounts you are entitled to receive.
8. Find out about automatic seat belt, airbag, and anti-lock brake discounts
If your vehicles are equipped with automatic seat belts, airbags, and/or anti-lock brakes you may be able to take advantage of additional discounts. Anti-lock brakes, for example, improve steering control and stability when a car stops, thus reducing accidents.
9. Consider insurance cost when making a move
Premiums tend to increase in larger cities where there is more traffic congestion and tend to decrease in smaller cities and rural communities where there is less traffic.
10. Contact your agent to see if you are receiving all discounts possible
Most insurance companies offer discounts for drivers over 55 years old, for 3 years of accident-free driving, driver training courses, good grades for students, anti-theft devices, and having more than one vehicle insured with the company.
